You figured it out but you can' no longer....

   When I look back now, I can understand but I didn't understand in time. 

  The older I get and the more things I experience, the more I understand what exactly they went through that I didn't understand back then. 

  Unfortunately you may not understand in time to talk to them about it. 

  I experience things now that I remember older relatives going through when I was younger but they are no longer around to talk to them about it.

  I used to think old people were kinda grouchy and set in their ways. And now that I am one of the old people, I understand why  and I too am kinda grouchy and set in my ways.

  Change is exciting when you are younger but when you are older it is hard to change. 

  I can see the puzzled look on my grown children's faces when they don't understand me at all.

  After a while I give up trying to make them understand and I tell them nevermind, one day you will understand.

  That is exactly what my older relatives would tell me when I didn't understand them. 

  We all have been there and say if only I Knew then what I know now....
