what did they do before electricity?

Well the power has been out for only an hour yet it feels like an eternity. At first I realize my shows would be on soon. Then I realized the internet isn't available because it runs off the electricity. I stumble to find a flashlight only to find when I get there it wasn't where it was supposed to be. Then I stumble into the kitchen to get a drink and realize I shouldn't be opening the refrigerator because it would let out the cold air spoiling the food. Its not long before I realize how hot it is getting inside with no air or fans going. It had only been a short time and I was miserable. I couldn't help but wonder what people endured before electricity was invented.
